Plans

Ever since she’d worked for dailydeals.com, she’d been a real mess. That was the long and short of it. And she couldn’t blame the work place. It was a brightly lit office with brightly lit people who seemed inordinately happy most of the time. Maybe that was it, actually. Maybe seeing such constantly cheerful people was throwing her off. What made them so happy? Did they really find this much fulfillment in hunting down bargains and posting them online for the general public?

It’s not like they were heart surgeons or teaching inner city kids. They were just office types, doing their office jobs, and yet most of them seemed like they’d followed their hearts here. It was like ever since they were two, they’d been planning to do this very thing, so they’d reached the pinnacle of their career–the height of their ambitions. If she was honest with herself, she envied them their contentment. Yes, she’d been a real mess–barely making it into work on time, staying out late at night, drinking and partying trying to forget the extreme boredom that seemed to characterize her existence.

Well, she couldn’t even complain about it to anyone, because if her biggest problem in life was that she found everything too dull for words, she didn’t have the right to talk about it. There were plenty of people dealing with tragedies, at a personal level and at a national one. There was her neighbor who was going through a nasty divorce, and her cousin who just found out he has cancer. Then there were all the people of Haiti and entire countries of poor people in places like Congo, India, and China. It was silly to even think of boredom as a problem at all. She should consider doing some kind of service like the Peace Corps.
